@Samuel-fd6hy No, the bio park refused to let her breed even though she was the obvious choice. The result is that they have not had any babies for 5 years and this has destroyed the herd. In the wild there would be babies born into the herd every year. And that controls the behaviour so the capybaras learn how to behave according to their status.

I'm really amazed at the general age of the capys at BioPark. I hope they have a plan for older capybaras. They have created a place that the capabaras largely lead fulfilling lives. It may just be that you can't treat older capybaras differently without subjecting them to unwanted attention from the herd. I was so happy to see Hinase had a peaceful life in the end. No attacks. Thanks for sharing your videos, they bring joy and I think about them and their lives. Maybe I will see BioPark someday.

@@CapybaraWorld I hope maybe you get a documentary done , it's quite ambitious but you have a phenomenal volume of work. You can open people's eyes to how the capybaras live through the lives of individual capybaras. Following them and knowing their name, being able to identify them in the group. Only then can you begin to understand their situation. I love the Japanese adoption of capybaras as an iconic animal. I laugh and am entertained by their videos, the soundtrack and the graphics are entertaining but limit the educational value. Be encouraged

Thank you very much for your good wishes for the documentary. I do have so much footage of Hinase, both of her in her prime and in her last months. I find it profoundly moving and inspirational her determination to continue to live. I also find it heartbreaking how determined she was to climb that Mossy Hill to be with her daughter, Ryoko. Ryoko had already passed away in tragic circumstances which I have written about elsewhere. It would obviously be an arthouse movie and when I finish it I would like to enter it at an appropriate film festival. I had a place at NYU film school, one of the 2 best world, when I was at NYU and I so regret not taking up the place because I decided to stay in England. I often wish, that among the people who love capybaras, there was a filmmaker, a vet and a billionaire! You are absolutely right in what you say. I get frustrated at the way Japanese people view capybaras and other animals. Are you on messenger? I will be in Japan next 4 months and there is never enough time so it is easier to respond via messenger than RUclips.

It has the same effect on a capybara as being petted, but I suspect there is also an evolutionary adaptation which enhances the bond between older herd members and the babies. Capybaras also love to be pecked by birds in the wild.

That is a very interesting thought. I must try and find out more.

I've keeping guinea pigs for decades and have never seen a piggie that would have something like the knob shown in this video. Guinea pigs normally just have a spot on their butts where no hair is growing and where you can feel the tip of their tail bones (most guinea pigs have 7 tail bones, but very short and fused together). Though there are lots of different breeds and breeding lines, so it is possible that there are guinea pigs with the same tail knob.

I completely agree with you. One problem I come across in Japan is that many Japanese people, including many zookeepers, do not understand animals or feel their emotions. Japanese people put up with things that people in the West would not put up with. This may be partly why they are so insensitive to animals suffering.

I am so envious of you living in Brazil but so sad to hear what you say about the lives of capybaras. It is heartbreaking that anyone driving a car could mercilessly hit them. And it is tragic that the only rivers which many capybaras can swim in are dirty. Thank you very much for your sad but interesting information. I have been studying capybaras for 12 years and I want to learn everything about them so your comments were very useful.

At the time, the biopark always separated pregnant females for 6 weeks before they gave birth and 6 weeks after they gave birth, which was really ignorant. And very dangerous as the female capybaras were often attacked by other females when they were allowed back into the herd, having been out of the herd for so long.

Yes, they can be enormously affectionate and as you say it is so important for bonding and for the cohesion of the herd
